Muxima, 618 Roman Road, E3 2RW - Parnell Road end. Independent Art & Culture Café promoting and supporting local and international artists. Great coffee, french pastries, home made cakes and paninis all week long; fresh breakfast and lunch on the weekends.

Carmelite, part of Bow Arts, adjoining the Nunnery on Bow Road. Their menu provides classic dishes from local artisan suppliers including Pie Cart, Little Pedlar Bakery and speciality roaster Nude Espresso coffee. These are complimented by hearty soups, savoury bites and seasonal puddings.

Kiki (Formerly Chicchi), 516 Roman Road E3 5ES. Italian café.

Mono, 535 Roman Road

or, slightly further away, but definitely worth the trip, the Counter Café on Roach Road (E3 2PA), Fish Island (approx 15 minute walk). Breakfast on the canal, opposite the Olympic Park!

Local pubs and bars worth a mention - best by far, in my humble opinion, is the Crate near Hackney Wick station. A 20 minute walk, or easy bus ride away (276 or 488 from Fairfield Road take you right there), it brews its own extensive range of beer, and serves damn fine pizzas as well. Again, on the canal, next to the entrance to the Olympic Park.
